What Transmission Fluid Does

The transmission fluid displaces some heat, but its greater task is lubricating the moving parts. An automatic transmission is a complicated system with a lot of moving parts that need good lubrication to work efficiently. Any fluid will wear down eventually. Transmission fluid lasts longer than many liquids, but you still may need to change it after about 60,000 miles. The fluid gets a buildup of grime, metal shavings, and other contaminants that can affect how well it lubricates.

Fluid Change or Flush

New fluid is bright red, and as long as it is that color it should be fine. Once it turns brown it needs to be changed. There are two levels of transmission fluid replacement. A fluid change involves draining the fluid out of your transmission and putting a new filter in. This does not get all the fluid out, but it works fine for most cars. At some point however you will need a flush, that will take out all of the old fluid, getting rid of all the buildup and impurities in the system. The severity of contamination makes the difference in which one you will need.
