Serving Columbus , OH
Here at Germain Subaru of Columbus, get a lot of positive feedback about the Subarus our customers have purchased. Lately, the 2022 Subaru Forester – and its Touring trim level in particular – have garnered a lot of praise. But there are curious potential customers – like yourself, perhaps – who wonder if the Forester Touring 2022 is a better buy than the Honda CRV 2023.
Before you take a virtual test drive with us, let’s go over how these two small SUVs stack up against one another.
Powertrain Options
The Subaru Forester Touring 2022 is powered by a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder that generates a power output of 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. This engine is matched up to a continuously variable automatic transmission (referred to by its acronym, CVT). All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard for the entire lineup, which is par for the course with Subaru vehicles. There are 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which serves to enhance the Forester’s off-roading capabilities. On-the-road handling is also exemplary in how secure it feels.
On the other hand, the Honda CRV 2023 is powered by a standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. A CVT comes paired with it, but all-wheel drive is only an option since front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard across the board.
Safety Features
Safety is a primary concern for Subaru, which is why they equip their vehicles with the Subaru EyeSight bundle of advanced driver aids. This gives the Forester Touring lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and a lane departure warning. The Touring also comes with a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, evasive steering assist, and a driver monitoring system. All of these features are well-tuned and are not prone to invasive alerts. Even when you test drive online, you will quickly see how intuitively these driver aids work.
Honda equips the Honda CRV 2023 with a bundle of driver aids as well, known as Honda Sensing. This gives the vehicle standard blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane keep assistance. Voice recognition does not work as well as it could, and it is only available on the line-topping Sport Touring trim level.
Cargo Space
Small SUVs can offer you a decent amount of cargo space for stashing and transporting your things. In the Forester, you get a good amount of cargo space, but with the cargo floor layout and the high roof, you get more versatility than you do from other small SUVs, including the Honda CR-V. You can tote a reasonable amount of camping gear back there, your kids’ sports stuff, or a week’s worth of groceries for your family.
The Honda CR-V does have a good amount of cargo volume but is slightly lacking in versatility. When the rear seats are left in place, you get 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space. The cargo space isn’t all that deep, and the roof isn’t as tall as the Forester’s. You also do not get as many creatively designed interior storage options throughout the cabin like you did in CR-Vs made prior to 2023 – or in the Forester Touring.
